The process of designing the wedding invitations, RSVP cards and directions was a lot like any other design project. First, I did some sketches and then I mocked up about seven different designs for Sara and Matt to look at.

Our favorites ended up being the same and we went with my first design.

My idea was to make it like a poster, so if they wanted to at a later date, they could enlarge the invitation and use it as a piece of artwork in their house.

After they decided on a design, we added and deleted things to fit their needs and adjusted the size to fit the envelopes.

It truly was a group effort. I ended up making complementary invitations and menu cards for the rehearsal dinner as well. Same theme but a different look so that the two invitations wouldn’t get confused.

This summer while we were driving in a part of Vicksburg, Miss., that is not mentioned on any travel brochures, we saw this abandoned building.

Abandoned buildings are cool. And kinda dangerous.

When we got closer, we could tell it was once a state hospital.

State hospitals are eerie enough. An abandoned state hospital that’s been reclaimed by nature is even creepier.

Therefore, I had to pretend like I was in the middle of a scary movie and was attempting my escape from living-dead, zombified mental patients.

You know what I mean. For example, in an old late-’90s episode of “Buffy,” I noticed one time how Xander is drinking Surge, the green impostor to Mountain Dew.

To the best of my knowledge, Surge is off the market. And my soda time lines aren’t great, but I wonder if Surge coincided with Clear Pepsi and other fizzy fails.

Hmm.

Anyway, back to “Bones.” So, in one of the episodes Special Agent Seeley Booth is using a Motorola RAZR, the coolest phone ever back in 2004 and known for it’s crazy thinness.

“Wow!” I thought. “I remember when that was cool! That’d be so lame nowadays.”

That’s when the universe stepped in .

My phone didn’t look like that before it landed in an Austin parking lot and was run over last weekend. Something like that tends to kill your phone.

So I had to dig in my box of electronics for an old phone.

This is what I pulled out. The only surviving, old phone I still have.

Totally dated? Yes. I feel very conspicuous using it. It kind of reminds me of a day-glow pantsuit I had in grade school — obviously just past the trend. Not even a pre-ban slap bracelet could save me.

Seen better days? Yeah. I’m not sure if it’s the technology or just the byproduct of being beat up and well-used, but the lag time is seriously painful.

I totally feel like I’m living 2004 all over again, but there is no more mocking of the Motorola RAZR. Oh, no. I’ve learned my lesson.

My shiny, new phone arrives Monday and the RAZR will go back into storage, waiting until the next time I need rescuing.

“A lot of $1 bills. Are you a waitress?” she asked.

“Or a stripper,” I replied.

It got a laugh out of the guy next to me.

I’m done with “Rework,” which was an interesting (and easy) read. Now I’ve moved onto Anne Frank. I’ve been meaning to read it for a while. I’m only about 60 pages into it, but it makes me really glad it’s not written by today’s American teenager.

I’m afraid it would sound something like, “OMG. Sirens again. FML.”
